I used to have a cute, cuddly rabbit as my pet. It was incredibly smart, able to unravel my carrot supply and feed himself. Also, I didn't need to potty-train him since he knew that he can only poop and pee in his cage. In my long and tiring search for an appropriate name, I stumbled upon the Chinese zodiac that is the rabbit. Apparently, if you were born on 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 or 1999, you are known to be part of the “Year of the Rabbit”.

The positive characteristics of this sign include being articulate, talented, ambitious and clever especially in business. Rabbits never back out of contracts and put much importance in their word. With the great potential to be a good gambler, a rabbit has the uncanny ability to choose the right thing- but they rarely gamble because they are wise and conservative. Hmm.. maybe I should start looking for some rabbit-friends, round them up and hit Vegas!

Since I was young, I've always had a notebook and a pen beside my pillow on my bed. I called it my “dream journal”. Because dreams are so easily forgotten when we wake up, it had to be within grabbing distance from me so I can write the little that I remember. Browsing through it, I was surprised to see certain entries from as early as a month ago were completely forgotten and if I didn't write it myself, I wouldn't believe that I actually dreamt these things.

Physicist John Hartmann shows studies proving that dreams are a form of psychotherapy. Because the main goal of sleeping is to allow your brain to rest, external factors like stress and emotional anxiety can create a conflict with the ultimate goal of sleep. Hence, we dream. Our subconscious creates solutions to the problems we have during the waking hours, and during this “therapy session”, we are able to relax and visualize all our problems being solved. I guess the reason why you forget them instantly as soon as you wake up is because back in the real world, there are problems to be solved, and stress to cope with.

The Chained Woman

Andromeda was a beautiful woman, daughter of King Cepheus and the narcissist Queen Cassiopoeia. Because the Queen incurred the wrath of Poseidon, he sent a sea creature to flood their kingdom and destroy everything of theirs. The oracles advised the King, who was in sheer panic and on the brink of madness, that someone should be offered to the sea-god Poseidon as a sacrifice to appease him.

Cassiopoeia did not hesitate to make a sacrificial lamb out of her daughter, and this is why Andromeda was called Mulier Catenat or “the chained woman”. She was stripped of all her clothing and chained to a rock on the sea. Had Perseus not come to her rescue her life would have ended there, but thankfully he defeated the monster. Andromeda and her hero got married and lived a happy, wonderful life together with seven sons and one daughter. When Andromeda died, she was made into a constellation by the goddess Athena beside her mother Cassiopoeia and her husband Perseus.

The Winged Horse

I first heard of Pegasus at the Disney movie Hercules. I found it to be such a beautiful creature- a pristine white horse with large powerful wings, wow! Recently, my dad and I were on the roof deck and he pointed out a bunch of stars, telling me that it was the constellation Pegasus. I've always loved horses, so I decided to do a bit of background research on this Greek hero.

The name “Pegasus” came from an ancient weather-god named Pihassasas, which means “god of lightning”. I was surprised to see that Hercules never rode this winged wonder, and was simply used in the movie since he was the only “means of transportation” available. The father of Hercules, however, was the master of Pegasus. Zeus tasked this winged horse with the delivery of thunder and lighting bolts, and Pegasus served him well. He never dropped the weapons, and was always quick to give Zeus whatever he needed. Unlike the gods, Pegasus was mortal and was fiercely loyal until the last day of his life, Zeus rewarded his faithful service with a constellation. Up to this day, everyone can see Pegasus looking down from the heavens.

The only constellation I can clearly pinpoint in the sky is Orion's Belt, which are three stars shining brightly in equal diagonal distances from each other, forming a wide “v” in the sky. Orion was the son of Euryale and her husband, the sea-god Poseidon. This enabled him to walk on water and travel from one island to another. One day, he got drunk and accidentally attacked a woman named Merope. Her father Oenopion go so angry with this that he took revenge on Orion by blinding him. He was healed by the sun-god Helios, and sought revenge against Oenopion.

The wise king, however, managed to escape Orion's wrath by going into hiding. As he hunted for the king, he boasted to the heavens that he had the ability to kill every single creature on earth. This incurred the anger of Mother Earth, who sent a Scorpion to kill him. As a memorial to the brave hunter, Zeus placed him on the sky as a constellation, as well as the Scorpion which ended his life.

The Price of Vanity

After watching the movie (romantic comedy starring John Cusack and the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale), there was one scene in the movie that constantly played itself in my head. It was when John was tracing the moles on Kate's arm with a pen and viola came Cassiopoiea the constellation.

According to Greek mythology, Queen Cassiopoeia was the beautiful wife of King Cepheus. Just like Snow White's stepmother, she was also vain, arrogant and self-absorbed. Mother to Andromeda, she would constantly boast that they were more beautiful than all the daughters of sea Gods. Naturally, the ruler of the sea Poseidon got very angry and his wrath was manifested by a huge flood that threatened to destroy the kingdom. Adding heartlessness to her growing list of villanous traits, Cassiopoeia chained her daughter Andromeda to a rock as a sarifice to appease the ruling sea God. Thankfully, she was saved in the nick of time, but Poseidon decided that the Queen should not leave unscathed. As a punishment for her cruelty and narcissism, she was placed in the heavens, doomed for all eternity to revolve around the celestial pole hence being upside-down half the time.

The Moving Sky

I was at a beach trip a couple of months ago with my photographer friend who kept insisting on taking star-trails. Quick definition: a star trail is something that pops up in the camera when you've left it on a tripod facing the sky for about 2 hours and set it in such a way that it takes one picture every 5 minutes or so. The long and short of it is that you can see how the stars move, and when you put all the pictures together in overlap mode with an SLR, it actually looks like a cool shooting star, or if you're lucky enough to catch a cloudless night, you can see intricate patterns left by the stars weaving in and out of each other's trails.

We were just lying on the sand with a couple of beers for two hours, everything was quiet and still around us- except for the sky, which was engaged in a silent dance as the stars twinkled down on us.

Constellations

Stargazing is a practice often done by couples to add more flames in their romance, or by groups of friends who just want a night of relaxation. By definition, a constellation is an area within the imaginary sphere rotating around the Earth, concretized by groups of stars that can be seen and pointed out during those cloudless nights. Each constellation has a fascinating story behind it, and these star-groups have different symbolisms in different parts of the world.

In the West, each constellation is believed to be created by ancient Greek gods and goddesses who watch over them when the sun has set. For the Eastern population, especially the Chinese, they see these concentric and coaxial symbols to dictate their luck at a certain point of the year, with the rotation of the moon around the earth playing a significant role in their superstitious beliefs. Whatever your reason is for stargazing, it is undeniably one of the small wonders of nature as darkness and tranquility swallow up the sky's blinding light.

Rabbits, by nature, are very superficial. They magnify almost everything they have making it to appear bright and wonderful. They are however graciously hospitable and are culturally well-mannered. Rabbits are ambitious. Sometimes, they go beyond their limits just for them to attain what they really want.
